Measure & Instrument has developed a compact and lightweight radiation detection system for training purposes and for beam measurements suitable in many facilities. The IM RadDetect is almost the size of a USB flash drive and consists of the following:

  • A photodiode as an x-ray or charged particle sensor in counting mode. A range of scintillators can easily be attached to it, such as lanthanum bromide (LaBr3) or LiF/ZnS for gamma and neutron detection respectively.
  • An electronic board consisting of a preamplifier designed by M&I to receive current signals from the sensor and amplify them to the required level for further processing. A fast shaper (10 ns) is selected for high counting rates measurements as needed in accelerator-based facilities.

The sensor and the electronic board are assembled in a detector housing made of aluminum. This versatile and compact detection system is therefore ideal for hands-on training. Additionally, it can find applications in research institutes, universities, or laboratories for radiation beam monitoring. Finally, it exhibits some attractive features:

  • Detection and measurements of x-ray, gamma-ray, neutron or charged particles from single event up to 10 million count per second.
  • Analog output (positive or negative) that can go directly to a counter for intensity measurements or to a discriminator for further processing.

The detector housing output has 3 cables: one for the amplifier bias voltage, a SHV connector for the sensor bias and a BNC connector for the amplifier output signal.

The set of spectroscopic detectors developed by M&I are based on fast sensors (0.25 to 1 cm2 avalanche photodiode) along with fast shaping time front-end electronics. Specific scintillators are coupled to the sensors depending on the types of radiation detection requested by our customers. Below is the list of detectors offered.

IM RadDetect-X: X-ray spectroscopic detector from 1 KeV to 20 keV
IM RadDetect-G: Gamma spectroscopic detector 
IM RadDetect-C: Charge particle spectroscopic detector (alpha, beta, protons, heavy ion beams, etc)
IM RadDetect-N : Neutron detector (thermal to fast neutrons)
